List
Choose
a saxophone from one of the following brands: Selmer,
Conn, Yamaha, Yanigasawa,
Keilwerth,
Vito. These manufacturers all
have a student model and a professional model. Antiqua
Winds is a newer make on the market in the last 10 years. The brass
seems a little thin and could make the horn prone to bending. However,
I have had many students use them with no problems.
Choose
a clarinet from one of the following brands: Vito,
Buffet, Selmer, W.
SCHREIBER & SÉHNE, Noblet
and LeBlanc. Many student models
are plastic or hard rubber. A wood clarinet produces a much warmer tone.
To
insure that the horn you rent or purchase is in good working order,
have one of the store staff play the horn for you and demonstrate its
playability. You might ask her or him to play a full range chromatic
scale up and down a few times. It doesn't have to be fast, just playable.
It can be very discouraging to attempt to create your first tone on
an instrument and be stymied by a leaky pad or bent key.
